Introducing Bernie McDade
Bernie, Head of Management Training in Professional Development at The College of Law, is an accredited mediator who has dealt with work in all areas of dispute resolution.
Bernie McDade was admitted as a solicitor in Australia in 1973 and practised extensively in the areas of criminal and insurance law. He was a partner in Sparke Helmore Lawyers, a mid-tier Australian law firm, and was managing partner of their Brisbane office until July 2005.
Bernie had a long-established and excellent reputation as a litigation and advocacy tutor at The College of Law, New South Wales, before joining The College of Law of England and Wales in London in July 2006, as a senior dispute resolution tutor. Since then his role has expanded to become Head of Management Training in Professional Development.
Bernie teaches across a wide range of programmes in dispute resolution, ranging from our Professional Skills Course core module 'Advocacy & Communication Skills' through to cross-border dispute resolution issues for a Magic Circle firm. To complement this training, Bernie has also become one of the College’s lead tutors in Public Access for Barristers, the mandatory course for barristers who want to be able to take instructions direct from members of the public.
In the field of management training, Bernie has written and delivered courses on managing risk and managing people, and has also led the recent redesign of the College’s Management Course Stage 1.
Commenting on his experience of working at the College and of life in the UK, Bernie said, ‘being at the College has been great and I have enjoyed the opportunity to work with clients and help develop the College’s programmes. Living in England has been exciting and fulfils a lifelong ambition of spending some time in Europe. The only thing I do not talk about is the weather and cricket’.
Bernie is just one of the many inspiring tutors and consultants for The College of Law, all of whom are committed to sharing their first hand experience to teach your team the skills they’ll need to succeed.
