Public Access for Barristers
course overview

What?

Barristers have been able to accept instructions direct from the public since July 2004. The College of Law developed a one-day face-to-face course which provides barristers with the knowledge and skills needed to undertake public access work and this has been running successfully at the College since 2005. The College of Law is a BSB accredited provider of this course.

The College of Law is the market leader in the provision of public access training, with vast experience in delivering the programme. Over 2,000 barristers and chambers' administrative staff have successfully completed our public access programme since 2005, as well as over 45 chambers completing our in-house programme.

Who?

This course is suitable for barristers in independent practice. To carry out public access work, a barrister must have:

  • Practised for a total of three years following completion of pupillage
  • Attended a public access training course of a BSB accredited provider

Once a barrister has satisfied the requirements he/she may apply to the Bar Council for accreditation to conduct public access work.

These requirements may be waived by the BSB if the applicant is a former solicitor or can demonstrate experience in an environment where public access to the client has been common.

Why?

  • Widen your expertise and expand your client base
  • Understand the scope and nature of public access work – and the rules and conditions to be complied with
  • Gain confidence in managing the client relationship
  • Appreciate the process implications of undertaking public access work – funding issues, assessing suitability, client care, administrative procedures and the impact of money laundering regulations
  • Highly interactive small group course using a variety of training techniques including short presentations, group work and structured feedback
  • Designed and delivered by qualified lawyers with significant professional experience of working directly with the public
  • Wide range of public course dates
