QLTT subject areas

The QLTT covers four core subject areas known as 'Heads':

  • Head I – Property
  • Head II – Litigation (Civil or Criminal)
  • Head III – Professional Conduct and Accounts
  • Head IV – Principles of Common Law

The Heads you are required to take are determined by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), based on your relevant experience, title and ‘primary jurisdiction’ (where you first qualified as a lawyer). This will be confirmed on the Certificate of Eligibility that you must obtain from the SRA before you can sit any QLTT Heads.

As a guide, here are the requirements covering some of the more common primary jurisdictions:

Primary jurisdiction QLTT Head(s) required
Most Commonwealth countries, Australia, Canada (excluding Quebec), India and barristers of England and Wales Head III
EU countries, Quebec, Sri Lanka Heads I, II, III and IV
Israel, South Africa Heads I, III and IV
Scottish solicitors Head I
USA, Nigeria Heads I, II and III

SRA review of QLTT

The SRA has now published proposed changes to the QLTT system. The new regulations have been approved by the Legal Services Board and are due to be introduced in September 2010.

You should not let this deter you from registering to do the QLTT, as there will be a commitment to ensure that students who have started on the current system can complete their qualification under those regulations.

If you still have a valid Certificate of Eligibility, but have not yet completed all elements of the QLTT, you are advised to book any additional training/assessments as soon as possible.
