Sporting activities

At York we run a wide range of sporting activities using both the College and other local facilities. The following list provides an insight into the teams we run each year.  If your particular sport is not mentioned it is quite possible to start a new team or sport with assistance from Student Services.

Rugby

Our Rugby team plays against regional clubs and universities. In the past they also entered a couple of local competitions – the Rugby 7’s tournament held at York St. John’s College, which our team won and the University and College Knockout Cup and Plate Competitions held in York.  More impressively, we host our very own Rugby 7’s tournament and Touch Rugby game at York which are both a huge success.

We have two Rugby pitches both situated on the College site alongside the racecourse.

Football

The first team plays in Sunday afternoon league and has won the Presidents Trophy competition.  We often also have a second team who play friendly matches against regional university/college sides. Our inter-class 5 a side football league is very popular, all the teams welcome enthusiastic players of all standards.

We have the use of three pitches, one on the College grounds and two hired from the local Council, which are situated adjacent to the College on the Knavesmire. During the winter months, we hire an astro-turf football pitch at Oaklands Sports Centre in Acomb.

Hockey

The Hockey team organises games against other local and regional University and College teams. They play in regional tournaments in Blackpool at Easter and in the York summer league where they are usually placed well. We hire an astro-turf pitch at York University Sports Club for both training and games.

Netball

The York Netball team play in the York District League in the 4th Division. A netball court is marked out on the tennis courts and courts are hired for evening and weekend matches at York University.

Rowing

We have had great teams over the years. They take part in various events around the country and locally in York.    Tennis The College has two outdoor hard courts in the grounds which are available for use all year round. Equipment is available if you don’t have your own and we can bring in an instructor to offer coaching if we have sufficient interest.

Squash

There are four squash courts at the York University Sports Centre in nearby Heslington, where Heslington Squash Club is based.

Yoga

Classes are run by a qualified instructor and are held in the College during term time.

Sports Day

Our Sports Day takes place in April and offers our Rugby, Netball and Football teams the opportunity to test their skills against regional Firm’s teams and University Student Law Society teams. It is a competitive yet fun filled day with cups and plates for the winners and runners up and the opportunity to network with the Firm’s. Alongside the serious business of playing we have an all day bar, buffet and a ‘tug of law’ for fun.

This year our Sports Day was on 26th April 2008.
