Our pioneering approach

We’re constantly innovating to ensure that we lead and reflect the latest developments in legal practice and learning. We take a pioneering approach to training, often leading the field on a national and international level. Here are just a few examples:

Strategic partnerships

We’ve worked with the Open University for many years to offer one of the UK’s most popular distance learning law degree programmes. We also work closely with major firms and industry bodies, such as the Law Society, Bar Council, International Bar Association, European Lawyers Association, Practical Law Company, the British Council and the Land Registry.

Widening access to law

We’re developing a national network in partnership with the Sutton Trust charity designed to attract people from less privileged backgrounds to the legal profession. The goal of the programme is to assist up to 750 eligible students by 2010.

Kick-starting legal careers

We launched the Future Lawyers Association to give prospective students inspiration, knowledge and practical tools for a career in law. Membership is free and includes a termly e-newsletter, careers advice and information on all aspects of legal training and life as a lawyer.

Leading the way worldwide

We’re leading providers of the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test (QLTT) qualification, which allows lawyers qualified in other jurisdictions to practise in England and Wales. This is complemented by a range of courses with an international focus, including our LL.M in International Legal Practice delivered in association with the International Bar Association.

Innovations in learning

We develop innovative training methods such as interactive online tutorials (i-Tutorials), online test and feedback and collaborative group exercises, broadcast-quality DVD training (Legal Network Television), as well as modular programmes of in-house training.

Alumni network

We have the largest UK legal alumni network, which includes high profile former students like Lord Falconer QC and managing partners in leading law firms. And we’ve developed a web-based facility to allow former students to keep in touch.
