Business and commercial awareness

Law firms increasingly tell us they are looking for trainees with a strong commercial awareness and business acumen.  We provide a programme to build these skills - this includes guest speakers and presentations from an impressive list of legal and business professionals.

At Guildford we run 2 business games at the moment, one involving stock market analysis and one is a business simulation.

To help you develop the business and commercial awareness skills valued by employers, the centre organises activities involving analysis of the financial markets and business management issues.  Major local businesses and law firms assist in the running of these team games which provide an enjoyable way to increase your wider knowledge.

Employer talks or outside speakers programme

The team is hosting a full and varied programme of employer talks that include speakers from different practice areas, from every size of law firm in London and the regions, from the CPS and from a number of in-house legal departments such as EDF Energy and Warner Bros.

Mentoring Scheme

The mentoring scheme is for students who have no legal experience.  There are a limited number of places so students have to apply via the careers service for a place on the scheme.  This academic year (2007-2008) the mentoring scheme has attracted more mentors, both in law firms and in-house, than ever before.  Whilst open to all students, we aim to select those who will benefit most from the scheme.  Increased confidence, a better understanding of practice areas and valuable work experience are amongst the main gains reported by students who have had a place on the scheme.

Client interviewing competition

Every year students have the opportunity to develop and practise their client interviewing skills.  Teams from the Guildford College of Law compete against Surrey and Kingston University.  This is organised through the Surrey Law Society and is supported by members of the Surrey Legal Community.

Negotiation competition

There is a national negotiation competition whereby teams from the College of Law and a range of universities compete against each other.  The College of Law sponsors the regional heats which take place in Guildford and York.  The competition involves a wide number of professionals from the legal, business and educational sector who act as judges.

This is a fantastic opportunity for students to practise their negotiation skills.  The winners of the regional heats go through to the national final.

Prize Giving

We have an annual prize giving for the students who achieve the highest marks on each of the courses.  The prizes are donated by several firms and other legal organisations and are awarded for a number of categories.  The names of winners are added to the sponsor organisation prize boards which are on display in our student library.

The prize giving normally takes place in November and is an evening event attended by College tutors, sponsor organisations and students with their guests.  This is an enjoyable evening where everyone can celebrate individual student achievements.
