Finding your accommodation
You should aim to sort out your accommodation well before the start of the course. But if you don’t manage to do that, don’t despair. There’s usually a period of consolidation during the first few weeks of term when, due to last minute cancellations, accommodation becomes available at short notice. You should regularly check the accommodation notice board in Student Services for new adverts.
In the meantime, if you need somewhere to stay, try these:

Considering your options
Before you decide where to live, have a think about the following
- can you afford the rent and bills for the whole course?
- who pays the electricity, gas, telephone, TV licence, water rates?
- is it near to public transport, and how much will it cost to travel to and from the College?
- is it suitable for quiet study?
- is the heating adequate?
- who else will live there e.g. landlord or other students?
Types of accommodation
- Owner shared properties – an individual or family wishing to share their property with one or two students on a self catering basis. Always check to see if the rent includes gas and electricity. Telephone costs are unlikely to be included. You should check to see if smoking is permitted if you are a smoker or dislike living with smokers
- Student shared properties – furnished house or flat for students either sharing rent or paying on a room by room basis. Accommodation size will vary between two and seven students. Students will usually share electricity, gas and telephone bills. Always check to see if water rates and television licence costs are included and if smoking is permitted, should you be a smoker or dislike living with smokers
- Self contained flats/annexes/conversions – for one or more students. Properties are self contained but may adjoin a main house or business and again, check to see if smoking is permitted, if it is important to you

How much will it cost?
Rents vary depending on the size of the property and facilities provided for example:
- For owner share properties, expect to pay at least £50pw, with prices reaching £90+
- For student share properties, expect to pay at least £55pw, with prices reaching £100+
- For self contained properties, expect to pay at least £60pw, with prices reaching £110+
Figures will normally be for rent only; other costs may be applicable such as deposits, gas, electricity, telephone etc. The payment of gas and electricity bills will normally fall upon the tenant, it being rare for a landlord to cover these charges. Thus both you and your landlord should take meter readings when you move into and out of the property. Make a note of these in order to avoid disputes later on.
It is the tenant’s responsibility to register that they have moved into the property. The service providers should be notified of the date you move in and the meter readings from day one.
The bill will be sent to the tenant in the first instance, they can set up whatever payments method is most convenient to them.
