Quick tip

When you’re dealing with property agents, remember that it is an offence under the Accommodation Agencies Act 1953 for them to charge you a fee simply for registering with them or for showing you a list of accommodation. You should not pay a fee until they’ve actually secured you some accommodation. Some agencies may charge for drawing up a tenancy agreement or for other services. Others may act as the managing agent for the landlord and sign the contract on their behalf. Also remember that using a private agent will probably be more expensive than using the College to find your accommodation. You should check exactly what you’ll have to pay before entering into an agreement with any agent.

Short-term solutions

You should aim to sort out your accommodation well before the start of your course. But if you don’t manage to do that, don’t despair. There’s usually a period of consolidation during the first few weeks of term when, due to last minute cancellations, accommodation becomes available at short notice.

Please contact our accommodation officer Sheena Cole should you have any queries.
