QLTT course overview
What?
Being qualified in multiple jurisdictions greatly increases the marketability of individual lawyers and the capability of their firms. The Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test (QLTT) is regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and qualifies international lawyers, Scottish solicitors and barristers of England and Wales to practise as solicitors in England and Wales. The College of Law is the UK’s leading provider of QLTT and is recognised for its high quality training and high success rate. Courses are available on a public or in-house basis.
Please note that the SRA has replaced the QLTT with the new Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme (QLTS) from 1 September 2010. More information on QLTS.
Important information for QLTT Head III candidates
Who?
The QLTT is available until August 2013 for candidates who have been granted a Certificate of Eligibility from the SRA prior to 31 August 2010. Any applications submitted after this date will come under the new Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme. Further information on the QLTS.
The QLTT is a compulsory SRA requirement for all international lawyers, Scottish solicitors and barristers of England and Wales who wish to qualify as solicitors in England and Wales.
The amount of subjects areas (or ‘Heads’) you need to be tested on will depend on the jurisdiction you qualified in. In order to sit QLTT Tests you must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility from the SRA – this will confirm which Heads you need to take. Here’s a guide to the requirements covering some of the more common primary jurisdictions:
| Primary jurisdiction |
QLTT Head(s) required |
| Most Commonwealth countries, Australia, Canada (excluding Quebec), India and barristers of England and Wales |
Head III |

How?
QLTT Tests cover four core subject areas known as 'Heads':
- Head I – Property
- Head II – Litigation (Civil or Criminal)
- Head III – Professional Conduct and Accounts
- Head IV – Principles of Common Law
The Heads you are required to take are determined by the SRA, based on your relevant experience, title and ‘primary jurisdiction’ (where you first qualified as a lawyer). You must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility from the SRA before you can sit any QLTT Tests – this will confirm which Heads you are required to take.
We offer Tests for all four QLTT Heads – with more sittings in more locations than any other provider:
QLTT Test options
It is not compulsory to attend training before sitting QLTT Tests, but this is highly recommended to maximise your chances of success. We offer a wide range of study options including distance learning, face-to-face tuition, online revision and mock Tests:
