Head III – Professional Conduct and Accounts
Important
Are you planning to sit Head III in Sydney in 2012?
The April Head III examination is on 25 April 2012, which is a public holiday in Australia. As a result, it will not be possible to hold a sitting in Sydney on that date (although the Head III examination will still run on that date in London and Hong Kong).
As an alternative, you will be able to sit the Head III examination in Sydney on 8 February 2012 (there is also a London sitting on that date), or on 31 October 2012.
A 3-hour open book written exam, divided into two parts:
- Part one: Accounts (40%)
- Part two: Financial Services, Professional Conduct and Money Laundering (60%)
You must pass both parts of the paper – the pass mark for each part is 50%. Financial Services carries at least 15% of the marks. You may take a calculator into the exam, provided it is silent and non-programmable.

Head IV – Principles of Common Law
An oral exam that tests knowledge and understanding of the principles of common law and competence in the English language. It covers the English legal system and the principal statutes and substantive law of contract and tort. You will be questioned by a panel of assessors, and your exam will be recorded in case it needs to be reviewed later.
The Test covers four different areas of the syllabus, one of which you are required to prepare in more detail (the ‘Advance Topic’).You will be notified of the Advance Topic before the Test.
Immediately before the start of the Test, you will be given a document containing a law report, an extract from a law report or some statutory provision relating to the Advance Topic. You are given 30 minutes to study the document and make notes on paper provided by the College. During this time, you may refer to any book, document or other written material you may have. You will be asked questions on both the Advance Topic and the document during the Test. The questions are designed to show that you can study and assimilate an area of common law and deal with any problems in that area.
Please note that the only documents you may take into the Test are the document on the Advance Topic and the notes you made during the 30-minute study period. The pass mark is 50%.

General Test information
The QLTT is a test of aptitude, rather than memory, so you are allowed to take relevant books, documents or written materials into the Test (apart from Head IV).
You will be examined on the law as it stands on the day you are tested, to make sure your knowledge is up-to-date. You will not be asked to draft letters, statements of cases or other documents in any of the Heads, although Heads I and II may require you to comment on, or extract information from, documents provided to you at the Test sitting (you will be given an additional 30 minutes at the start of the Test to read these documents). To pass the Test, you will need to demonstrate that your English is of a sufficient standard to practise as a solicitor in England and Wales.
Broad topic areas for Heads I and II will be provided approximately 10 days prior to the Test. The Solicitors’ Code of Conduct is available from www.sra.org.uk
If you have special requirements and need specific Test arrangements, please give full details when you make your booking, together with supporting medical evidence or other details. We will contact you to discuss facilities that can be arranged for you.
Test results are posted to delegates six to eight weeks after the Test. A pass list is also published on our website. Please refer to the Pass List page for expected publication dates. You can re-take QLTT Tests if required, but you need to re-enrol to do so. There is no discount for re-takes, but your registration fee allows you to sit at three sittings, meaning that at second and third sittings (including re-takes) you will only be required to pay the Test fee. Please note that Test fees do not include any tuition – this is booked and paid for separately.
