We’ve changed our PSC programme to make better modern lawyers

More and more, employers use competency frameworks to assist them in making recruitment and career advancement decisions. A competency framework sets out the expected types of capability for an employee at a certain level.

For trainees, the training contract period is a vital stage of preparation for a career in law. Through our new Business of Law programme, the College's PSC identifies key competencies that are developed during the course and matches them with the core modules and with the electives, enabling trainees to build both confidence and self-awareness.

Business of Law demonstrably integrates learning and skills for use in practice. The competencies are broken down into four areas – Business, Law, Self, and Working with Others and are now clearly identified in all PSC modules, both core and elective, so that trainee solicitors, and their firms, can easily see which essential competencies will be taken back to the work place

Key benefits

  • Makes you perfect for practice by relating what you have learnt in the classroom to key competencies expected of trainees in the real world.
  • Not just teaching you the law, but helping your personal/career development as a self-reliant and client focused modern lawyer.
  • Helps you identify and evidence skills and competencies you’re using in your training contract and throughout your career.
  • Helps you develop and focus on the skills leading law firms tell us they are looking for.
