What?

Management Course Stage 1 (MC1) is a compulsory course to be taken after qualification and before the end of the third full CPD year. Our one-day face-to-face course uses a realistic law firm scenario and financial case study to deliver practical training on the fundamentals of law firm management. Courses are available on a public or in-house basis.

Who?

MC1 is a compulsory SRA requirement to be taken by all qualified solicitors before the end of their third full CPD year.

How?

Our one-day MC1 is delivered via face-to-face tuition and comprises three elements:

Managing Finance

  • Key performance indicators
  • Understanding profit
  • Controlling costs
  • Working capital control and cashflow management

Managing Clients

  • Understanding what motivates clients
  • Delivering what clients want, in the way they want it
  • The retainer and a solicitors’ professional obligations
  • Managing client relationships effectively

Managing People

  • Delegation and managing other people’s work
  • Effective teamwork and decision-making processes
  • Motivation
  • Performance appraisal

The course is based around a series of short, focused presentations by an experienced practitioner, explaining management concepts and terminology in straightforward jargon-free language. After each presentation, delegates will participate in realistic practical exercises designed to develop understanding of the issues that arrise day-to-day in the management of law firms.

Attendance will enable delegates to:

  • Consider the impact of decisions on the law firm's profitability, cash flow and productivity
  • Consolidate their understanding of the sources and uses of the key financial indicators
  • Develop skills in analytical review and financial trend analysis
  • Improve the way they organise and develop their clients relationships
  • Delegate and supervise other people's work more effectively

How much?

The 2011/12 fee is £185 + VAT.

This price is available to all delegates, with no need to sign up to any subscription scheme. Full payment must be received on booking.

CPD?

Our MC1 is accredited for seven CPD hours.
