Guildford
Sports and social

At Guildford you will find a very friendly and supportive environment, with a wide range of sport and leisure activities.

Guildford has recently become one of the South’s most popular places for pubs and clubbing. In addition you can enjoy a wide range of eating places in and around the lower and upper high street as well as along the River Wey. There are two excellent theatres and a multi-screen Odeon cinema within the centre of Guildford.

Guildford Spectrum Leisure Centre is situated near the town centre. It is home to the Guildford Flames Ice Hockey team. The Spectrum’s facilities include ice-skating, ten-pin bowling, swimming, health and fitness, aerobics, sports and athletics. Concessions are available to students. There is also an outdoor, Olympic-sized swimming pool called the Lido next to Stoke Park.

Within the local area there are other sports clubs such as Guildford Cricket Club, Guildford Hockey Club, Guildford Netball Club, Guildford Rowing Club and Guildford Rugby Club. However you will find that each year students create their own sports teams.

Every year our students organise a wide range of clubs and societies. The opportunity to join or find out more about these is at the Leisure Fairs held towards the end of September for both full-time and part-time students. You will receive an e-mail ahead of the term start which gives you the opportunity of registering your interest.

Social Events

Class Parties

At the start of term you will be invited to a class party where you can meet your tutors and get to know other students in your class.

Nightclub

At the start of term full-time students are invited out to an evening at a Guildford Nightclub. This is a good way of meeting students in other classes and on the other course.

Christmas Ball

The Christmas Ball Committee is formed at the Leisure Fair. The student members will organise everything to do with the evening - venue, menu, entertainment, photographer and raffle. Any profit is given to CHASE.

Summer Ball

When the summer exams are over the College presents a Summer Ball for you which is held in a large marquee on the lawn outside the Manor. This evening is a great opportunity for you to dress up, celebrate and unwind after a year of hard work.

Charity Events

CHASE

http://www.chasecare.org.uk/

CHASE is the College’s chosen charity. CHASE provides help and support to families with children and young people who are not expected to reach their nineteenth birthday. The journey these families share with CHASE can continue from diagnosis of the child’s life-limiting condition, through to bereavement and beyond.

CHASE receives no statutory funding, relying totally on donations.

College sports and social clubs are encouraged to raise money for this charity and you can find collection boxes in Student Services and the Café.

Throughout the year charity events are organised by students and staff. In recent years these have included;

  • Squash tournament - for CHASE
  • Cake sales – for CHASE and other charities
  • Productions by the Drama Society – for CHASE
  • Jelly Wrestling – for Red Nose Day
  • Red Head Day – for Red Nose Day
  • Wear it Pink - for the Breast Cancer Campaign
