Mooting and Negotiation Competitions

Skills of oral persuasion are central to the role of lawyers. We negotiate in all types of situation, whether it is the fine detail of a contract, or the terms of settlement of a dispute. Mooting is an activity aimed at developing your skills of legal argument in a court room setting. Like any other skill, the more you practise negotiating and mooting, the better you get.

We will be holding in-house competitions and also assist students wishing to take part in national events.

Speed Networking Event

The College of Law in Bristol recently held its first annual speed networking event with the Bristol Junior Lawyers Division (JLD) and University of Bristol Student Law Club.

Representatives from 10 legal organisations took part enabling students to get a clearer picture of the variety and complexity of work carried out by firms in Bristol.

The firms came from all sectors of the legal profession and included major national and regional players such as Beachcroft, Osborne Clarke, Clarke Willmott, TLT, Burges Salmon and Bond Pearce, commercial firms with a strong local presence such as Henrique Griffiths and Davies and Partners, public authority lawyers including the solicitor to the Avon and Somerset Police, and a pioneer of commoditized legal services in the shape of the Co-operative Legal Services.

Students divided into small groups and then had 5 minutes with each group of lawyers before being ushered onto the next station. The idea came about as a result of a suggestion by the Bristol Student Law Club for an event about life outside the City of London, and Bristol JLD’s wish to have some kind of networking event that was fun and more dynamic than the usual networking events.

The College of Law with its strong connections in the city were able to host the event and invite the legal community to take part.

Business Development Director, Steve Levett said “It was great that so many law firms and lawyers were so keen to help us with this initiative. It just shows that the College of Law is working closely with the community and providing events that are value and people are willing to support".
