Careers

Welcome to the Careers pages of The College of Law Birmingham.

Who should read this?

Students considering a place on our GDL, LPC or BPTC.

Why?

We are professionally qualified and experienced Careers Consultants and draw on our backgrounds in careers guidance, graduate recruitment and legal practice.

We are in regular contact with firms, sets of chambers and other legal employers so that we can give you up-to-date, relevant information to help you start your legal career.

You should consider the Careers Service an integral part of your support network here at the College.

What we do

Individual careers advice for all students covering:

  • Planning your legal career
  • Making applications, CVs and covering letters
  • Psychometric testing sessions designed to test your verbal and numerical reasoning ability.
  • Preparing for Interviews and Assessment Centres

How?

Through face-to-face appointments, workshops, e-mail contact or by telephone. This will quite often be determined by your personal preference.

What else do we offer?

  • A series of skills based workshops both before and during your time on the course, led by our Careers Consultants. These are designed to help you secure a training contract or pupillage.
  • Guest presenters from firms and chambers. These take the form of employer specific talks, skills based workshops and educational discussions.
  • Mentoring programme. You will have the opportunity to apply and benefit from the experience of a mentor who is a current practitioner or trainee.
  • Annual Employer Day – This is a Law Recruitment Fair held at the College of Law Birmingham each October. This will afford you the opportunity to discuss employment opportunities with legal employers from private practice, in-house and from local and central government.

Careers resources

  • Access to legal employment opportunities via a password protected vacancy database. Some vacancies are advertised exclusively to students at the College of Law.
  • Interview feedback forms. We have a database of employer information where current students have provided an insight into their experiences of the recruitment & selection process of firms and chambers. This can be a great help when preparing for your own interviews and assessment centres.
  • Handouts – hard copies and online. A full range of hand-outs are available to help you prepare for each stage of the recruitment and selection process.
  • Free Training Contract and Pupillage Handbooks are available to all students.

When can you contact us for advice?

Once you have paid your deposit for one of our courses you will have access to many of the services available. You do not need to wait until September. There is also free Careers advice available to students once they have completed their studies and joined the College of Law Alumni.
