W201 Module description
This second module in the law programme is intended for students who already have a good knowledge of the English legal system and legal method, building on the knowledge and skills developed in W200 Understanding law.
It covers two of the Foundations of Legal Knowledge:
The module is split equally between these areas.
Public Law
In the Public Law element, the relationship between the citizen and the state is considered. In outline, the module examines:
- Core constitutional principles
- Institutions of State: roles and inter-relationships
- Relationship between the citizen and the State
- Legal values that determine a citizen's rights and duties
- Civil liberties law
- How government action may be challenged (judicial review)

Criminal Law
In the Criminal Law element basic principles of criminal liability are considered in the context of specific criminal offences such as:
- Murder
- Burglary and theft
The scope of criminal liability is also considered, as are the requirements of specific defences such as:
- Loss of control
- Intoxication
- Insanity
- Diminished responsibility
- Duress
Areas where the criminal law is felt to be flawed and/or inconsistent are reviewed together with proposals for reform.
