Additional module information

You will be registered as a student of the Open University, with access to all the benefits this entails.

The module consists of materials, designed and written by academics from The College of Law. The materials, which include manuals and text books, draw on best practice in supported open learning and include everything you need to study at home (apart from internet access: for each module you are required to have access to the internet). Optional face-to-face tutorials may be offered.

  • Professional recognition
This module, together with the other three 60-credit law modules and a further 120 credit from Open University modules or from transferred credit, can contribute to a degree that is recognized as a Qualifying Law Degree. It is acceptable for completing the academic stage of training as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales, as long as you comply with the requirements of the professional bodies. You can find out more in our Recognition leaflet 3.13.
  • Assessment
Your performance on the modules will be measured by six tutor-marked assignments (eTMAs) and by a written examination.
  • Support from your tutor
You will have a tutor who will mark and comment on your written work, and whom you can ask for advice and guidance. There will be a study day on the use of a law library (including library exercises), which will be held at one of The College of Law's centres. If you intend to gain a qualifying law degree, you should attend this day. We expect to offer group tutorials which you are strongly encouraged, but not obliged, to attend. Where your tutorials are held will depend on the distribution of students taking the module. Your Regional Centre will provide you with both general and certain specialist help with your studies.
  • If you have special needs
The module is available in comb binding and in an alternative format. Please ask your Regional Centre about the help that is available for students with special needs. If you are a new student, make sure that you have our booklet 'Meeting Your Needs'.
  • What's included
Module books and other printed materials.
  • You will need
You will need internet access and a computer. If you have purchased a new Windows computer since 2002 it should meet your module computing requirements. Broadband access to the Internet is recommended. For more information about computing and to check the most up-to-date details & computer specification check the module description page on the OU website - W200 module description.
  • Presentation
The details given here are for the presentation of the module starting in February 2012. We expect it to be available at the same time once a year.
