What’s next for OU students?
As you come to the end of your law degree, you will probably have already given some thought to the next stage of your training and will know whether you are planning to become a solicitor or a barrister. We would like to take this opportunity to remind you of your options for study at The College of Law – the UK’s no.1 law school.
Are you planning to become a solicitor?
In this case, The College of Law guarantees you a place on the Legal Practice Course for seven years from the date you complete your LL.B (and obtain a Qualifying Law Degree). Your guaranteed place covers full-time (1 year), part-time (day, evening, weekend – 18 months or two years) and supervised online (S-mode – two years) study offered at our eight centres (Birmingham, Bristol, Chester, Guildford, London Bloomsbury, London Moorgate, Manchester and York).
If you wish to study the 7-month Accelerated LPC you are welcome to apply although the guaranteed place scheme does not cover this mode of study.
With our world-class LPC, you’ll benefit from an unbeatable record of finding students training contracts and can further your career aspirations with a choice of specialist study routes. Find out more about our LPC.

Please note that:
- the College cannot make this application for you
- OU students are not required to provide a reference. On the application form, please put admissions@lawcol.co.uk in the reference section
- our guaranteed places scheme does not apply to our 7-month Accelerated LPC although you are welcome to apply for this mode of study
Are you planning to become a barrister?
Our Bar Professional Training Course has been designed to resemble practice as closely as possible. The course is litigation-based with a heavy emphasis on developing and honing skills. Study follows a logical, realistic process from initial instruction to final appeal and learning is based around the six core skills and four knowledge areas stipulated by the Bar Standards Board. Most of your learning will be in small groups and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to put your learning into action through: practitioner evenings, mock trials, court visits, mooting, negotiating and advocacy competitions, and our tailored pro bono programmes.
For applicants to the BPTC, we are unable to offer a guarantee – under Bar Council rules no institution is able to guarantee places on the BPTC. However, your chances of an offer are increased if you apply in the first round and place the College as your first choice institution.
