Unpaid work experience
Gaining experience in a legal environment can prove highly beneficial to those seeking to enter the legal sector. However, both recruiters and candidates should be aware that, depending on the nature of the role, work experience placements may be covered by the minimum wage legislation. As remuneration, employment terms and duties are maters for the recruiter and applicant, the Careers Service will continue to advertise work placements. However, in response to student concerns, a decision has been taken not to advertise unpaid positions lasting longer than 28 days, except in exceptional circumstances. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has published a useful recruiter’s guide to internships and work placements, “Internships that work”, which is available from their website.
