1. Terms of Use

The College of Law encourages you to post your comments on the Future Lawyers Network website and its other websites where prompted and welcomes your feedback. For comments that do not comply with these Terms of Use we reserve the right to remove them. The College reserves the right to reproduce, publish and use any and all parts of any posting in any way it sees fit.

By accepting these Terms of Use you agree to not post any material that a reasonable person would consider:

• As including any racial, sexual or other offensive, provocative or discriminatory language.

• Is inappropriate to discuss within a forum which has users under the age of 18.

• Is defamatory, abusive, harassing or hateful and capable of damaging the reputation of a person or organisation. If successfully sued you could be held liable for considerable damages and costs.  

• That you do not have the necessary rights, licences and consents to post  

• Constitutes spam, unauthorised advertising or solicits  

• Infringes, dilutes, breaches, undermines or in any way constitutes unauthorised use of the intellectual property rights held by others including the College of Law and its related organisations

• Contains long embedded URLs  

• Invades anyone’s privacy or impersonates anyone  

• Is far off-topic as irrelevant posts lower the value of the debate for everyone and may be removed.  

• Encourages conduct that may or would constitute a criminal offence or give rise to civil liability, or that otherwise violates any law  

• The comment appears to contain irrelevant or excessive links or appears to contain code 

• Personal information as it is unacceptable to publicise your or anyone else's contact details including address, place of employment, name of educational establishment, telephone or mobile number, email address, etc. This is for your own safety and that of everyone who uses this service.  

• In a different language to English. Posts containing languages other than English may be removed. Common greetings and salutations in languages other than English may be acceptable.  

• As raising your voice. The use of capital letters is considered as raising your voice in internet shorthand.  
• As inappropriate usernames that are vulgar or offensive, etc. 

Use of the Future Lawyers Network is restricted to those aged 16 and over. If you suspect a user of being under the age of 16, please contact the moderator.

We will not edit comments to remove objectionable content, so please ensure that your posting contains none of the above to avoid it being removed.

Anyone posting a comment is deemed to accept the College's use and publication thereof. Notwithstanding any moderation, The College of Law cannot be held in any way responsible for the comments posted on the Future Lawyers Network website or any of its other websites. No reliance should be placed on any comments and nothing on this site should be seen as a substitute for formal legal advice. The College of Law does not endorse, approve or promote any comments appearing on this site nor the authors thereof.

The College will be alerted to all comments posted on the site. Anyone who violates the Terms of Use may be blocked from making future comments.

While e-mail addresses are required for registering to use the Future Lawyers Network and other parts of our website, they are not published on the Future Lawyers Network website or anywhere else with our website, nor are they shared. They may be used by the administrator or post author to privately contact the commenter.

From time to time the Terms of Use may be updated or changed so please make sure you check this page periodically.

2. Employability Service – Online resources

Information disclaimer

The Careers information contained on the Future Lawyers Network Site is provided to the best of our knowledge and with the best of intentions but should be treated as general guidance only. We cannot guarantee the accuracy of any information, position or actions discussed. As every person’s situation is unique, you are encouraged to make your own enquiries and conduct your own independent research.

Throughout our materials, we provide links to third party sites however we cannot be responsible for content of these sites.

Copyright

The copyright of the material on this site is held by The College of Law. Individual users are free to make use of the information contained on the Careers and Employability Section of the Future Lawyers Network site for their own non-commercial use.

Those working in an advice giving role within the education system (schools, colleges and higher education institutions) may, in addition:

• Make multiple copies for free distribution to students

• Distribute single copies electronically to individual students

However, the following acts are not permitted:

• Unattributed use of materials or plagiarism

• Loading copies of the documents onto a website

• Amending the documents in any way

• Using these materials for commercial gain in any way


Vacancy Advertising Service Disclaimer

The Employability Service at The College of Law provides a free vacancy advertising service to recruiters, available to those who have accepted their place at the College of Law, are current students or are members of the Alumni Association. Users of this service should be aware of the following conditions:

• The College of Law reserves the right to edit vacancies for clarity, brevity or for other justifiable reasons.
• We reserve the right to refuse to place an advertisement if, in our opinion, it is not in the interests of our students, The Employability Service or The College.
• Advertisers should ensure that vacancies submitted to us meet all requirements of current employment and equal opportunities legislation.
• The online service is provided free of charge, and every effort is made to keep the site up and running. However The College of Law gives no warranty of any kind in relation to this service which is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis.
• To the maximum extent permitted, the College of Law will not be liable for any loss, damage or inconvenience to an employer, advertiser, applicant or any other user, resulting from the use of this service.
• The Employability Service acts as a conduit between recruiters and candidates and cannot vouch for either party.
• This service is provided to assist with the recruitment into specific positions and must not be used to collect a ‘bank’ of CVs or applications for distribution to third parties, or for any other use other than to fill the vacancy or vacancies specified in the initial advertisement.
• All unpaid positions will be advertised as ‘work experience’, the unpaid nature of the role must be made clear and, except in exceptional circumstances, the position should last no longer than 28 days.
• We may change, suspend or discontinue any aspect of the service or content at any time.


The College of Law can accept no responsibility for the use made of these materials and shall not be liable for loses, of any sort, arising from the use of this information. All users of this website are deemed to be bound and agree with the terms of this disclaimer and copyright notice.

3. Data Protection Policy

Introduction

• The College of Law is committed to protecting the rights of individuals to privacy with regard to the processing of personal data

• It is necessary for the College to process personal data in the normal and proper conduct of academic and business operations

• Such processing will be conducted fairly and lawfully in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998

• If you have a query regarding the accuracy of your personal data then your query will be dealt with fairly and impartially

General use of personal data

• The College holds data on: prospective, current and former students; prospective, current and former staff; other business and academic contacts; and other individuals interested in the College

• This personal data is held in a variety of formats, electronic and manual

• The processing of personal data is subject to the rules laid down under the Data Protection Act 1998. Your personal data will be used only for proper purposes that are considered by the College to be for your benefit

• For students this will include (but not be restricted to) monitoring academic performance, statistical reporting, awarding qualifications and the provision of general academic and business services

• For staff this will include (but not be restricted to) the conduct of normal business management and employment matters

• For other individuals this will include (but not be restricted to) the normal conduct of academic and business relationships

• The protection of your personal data will be governed by the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998. Access to your data will be restricted to those personnel to whom it is necessary for proper purposes

• The College will not sell your personal data to third parties. Your personal data will only be transferred to third parties where this is for proper purposes related to academic and business matters, for example where this is required by professional bodies or where it is necessary for the delivery of services by third parties to you

The principles of data protection

There are eight Data Protection principles set out under the Act. In summary they are that personal data should be:

1. obtained and processed fairly and lawfully
2. held and used only for specified purposes
3. adequate, relevant and not excessive
4. accurate and kept up to date
5. kept only for as long as is necessary
6. processed according to the Act
7. held securely
8. held within the European Economic Area

The College is registered as a Data Controller under the Act and will adhere to these principles and the guidelines set out by the Information Commissioner.

Consent

• The College seeks to use your personal data only for the purposes of legitimate interests and, where practicable, with your consent

• For students, it is a condition of acceptance onto College courses that you consent to the College processing your personal data. By enrolling, you signify your agreement

• For staff, it is a condition of employment that you consent to the College processing your personal data. By applying you signify your agreement

• For other individuals, the College may gather your data during the course of normal academic and business activities. It will be used only for legitimate interests

• You have the right to know what personal data the College holds about you and for this to be correct. Procedures for the management of personal data are in place and enquiries may be made as set out below

Student information

• The College will hold personal data relating to your academic performance and discipline. This data may be released to appropriate third parties including professional bodies, universities, academic partners, employers and prospective employers. This may include providing references on your behalf

• Academic awards are considered to be public information and the names of successful candidates will be published on open pass lists in various media

Examination results

• You are entitled to know your examination marks but are not entitled to see your examination scripts

Confidential references

• You are not entitled to see references provided by the College on your behalf

• You may be entitled to see references about you received by the College, although this will depend on whether it compromises the privacy of a third party

Sensitive personal data

• Sensitive personal data is defined under the Act to include such matters as personal beliefs and health

• If the College holds Sensitive Personal Data about you then this will only be disclosed with your explicit consent or if required by law

Accessing your personal data

• You have the right to see the personal data that the College holds about you and for that data to be corrected if it is incorrect

• Minor requests about your personal data may be dealt with informally in the course of normal administration, at the sole discretion of the College. In the first instance, you should contact Student Services or your tutor

• If you wish to make a formal request for access to your personal data then this should be made in writing to the College Academic Registrar. There is a fee of £10 which must be paid in advance

4. Privacy Policy

We are aware that you may have concerns over disclosing information about yourself to us.

This privacy policy explains, amongst other things, what information we collect about you on this website and the reasons for this.

Overview

Our primary aim in collecting personal information is to provide you with a customised experience on our website - aiming to show you information that is relevant to you.

We also collect information for statistical purposes and to offer you future products and services that may be of interest to you.

Information we collect

• Log file information, including IP addresses. You can visit public areas of the site without identifying yourself or providing any personal information

• tracking IP addresses (the computer's internet address)

• monitoring how long a user spends on the site and which pages he/she visits - this helps us evaluate the use of different parts of the website

As a rule, we don't link IP addresses to anything that can identify you personally, ensuring you can remain anonymous. Nevertheless, we will attempt to use IP addresses to identify a user when we feel it is necessary to protect our services and other users.

Personal data

Any personal data relating to you gathered by us in the registration process or during your use of the service will be recorded and only be used in accordance with our Data Protection Policy.

The website uses various order and registration forms to enable you to request information, products and services.

When you register for the secure sections of our website you will need to provide us with information such as your name, date of birth, e-mail address and password.

Any personal data we collect during registration is designed to allow us to personalise the site for you and give you access the right kinds of information.

If you register, request further information or contact us we may keep a record of that correspondence and incorporate the information it contains into our database(s).

Internet security

The webserver that hosts this site is not used to store personal information of any kind.

Any personal information that you do provide is stored on a separate and secure database server within the College's firewall. There is no direct link between this database server and the internet and access is strictly limited to internal College IT staff and authorised site administrators only.

Access to certain areas of the site is limited to specific registered user groups only. Registering as an accepted applicant or active is restricted; we will verify your status before granting a user account of this type. If your status changes then your user account may be withdrawn or downgraded to 'general visitor' without further notice.

Whilst we do not directly track or record your usage of this website, in the event that we become aware that site security has been compromised as a result of external activity (including but not limited to external security attacks) we shall take reasonable measures which we deem appropriate. This includes but is not limited to internal investigation and reporting, and notification to and cooperation with law enforcement authorities.

This privacy policy may not apply to you if we believe you are misusing the website or if we are required to disclose information by a court of law or other relevant body.

Third party sites

Please be aware that some of the websites to which we provide links may collect personally identifiable information about you. We do not control these sites and are not responsible for the content or practices of third party websites. This privacy policy does not cover such sites.
