27 April 2010: Guildford College of Law Staff get Walking and get Talking for Breast Cancer Charity
Tutors and staff from The College of Law in Guildford will use both their feet and their legal expertise to raise money for a charity which supported a colleague during treatment for breast cancer.
A team from the College is in training for a 20-mile Pink Ribbon Walk and tutors will also present a series of law seminars for the local legal community in a bid to raise £5,000 for Breast Cancer Care.
Their fundraising efforts come after tutor Janice Collino recently successfully completed six months of treatment for breast cancer during which time Breast Cancer Care gave her invaluable support, advice and information.
Janice said: "This charity gave me the strength, understanding and optimism to come to terms with my cancer diagnosis and treatment. Entering the Pink Ribbon Walk is my opportunity to give something back, and I am deeply touched that so many of my colleagues are generously supporting me in this, either by walking with me, or by taking part in fund raising events at the College."

The law seminars take place on May 18, 20 and 25 at The College of Law’s Braboeuf Manor centre in Guildford and will update local lawyers on the legal issues surrounding equality in employment, the planning system and probate and wills. Each hour-long seminar costs £15, all of which will go to the charity, and will allow attendees to earn one Continuing Professional Development point.
On May 18 Bernadette Whitters, Associate Professor at the College’s Guildford centre, will examine changes in relation to employment introduced by the Equality Bill, the latest discrimination cases and the impact of recent equal pay cases.
At the seminar on May 20 Neil Duckworth, a Senior Lecturer at the College’s London Moorgate centre, will discuss developments in planning permission and planning gain while on May 25 Professor Lesley King, from the College’s Bloomsbury centre, will use the latest cases to highlight best practice in the arena of wills and probate.
Meanwhile Janice Collino will be joined by fifteen of her colleagues on the 20-mile Pink Ribbon Walk in aid of Breast Cancer Care taking place at Petworth House, West Sussex on Saturday, May 8.
Sheila Bramley, director of The College of Law in Guildford, said: “We felt that it was very important to join Janice in raising as much as money as possible for this fantastic cause and, in so doing, to remember family, friends and colleagues who have been affected by this disease. We have had great support from staff and students in our fundraising activities and we are really looking forward to taking part in the Pink Ribbon Walk.”
One in nine women in the UK will suffer from breast cancer at some point in their lives, and in 2006 alone more than 45,500 women were diagnosed with breast cancer, around 125 women every day. Not only women suffer from breast cancer – around 300 men are diagnosed with it every year. The incidence of breast cancer has increased by 84 per cent since records began in the UK in 1971.
