1 March 2010: College of Law in Birmingham nominated twice in city’s Legal Awards 2010
The College of Law’s Birmingham centre has received two nominations in the annual Legal Awards run by Birmingham Law Society.
Senior lecturer Paul McConnell has been short listed in the ‘Assistant/Associate Solicitor of the Year’ category for his involvement in a wide variety of projects including the centre’s annual Business Game, its LPC+ training partnerships with local law firms, its mentoring scheme and Pro Bono activities.
The nomination is also in recognition of his quality of teaching, commitment to students past and present and close contact with law firms.
Meanwhile the Centre for Pro Bono Services at the Birmingham centre has been short listed in the ‘Law Firm of the Year - Sole Practitioners and Firms up to Four Partners’ category. The centre, led by Pro Bono Co-ordinator Becky Parker, offers a range of free services for people in the local community, who may otherwise be unable to afford access to legal advice.
These include running a Legal Advice Centre, specialising in employment and other social welfare issues and outreach services, Birmingham Employment Rights Advice Line and Birmingham Employment Advice Clinic.
College Bar Vocational Course students also volunteer with the Birmingham TUC Centre for the Unemployed, an independent voluntary organisation giving free advice on welfare benefits and employment rights to low-waged and disadvantaged people. The students help to provide clients with representation before the Employment Tribunal.
Bernardette Griffin, director of The College of Law in Birmingham, said: “The Birmingham Law Society’s annual Legal Awards is an important event in the city’s calendar and receives many entries in every category. It is a terrific achievement for Becky, heading up Pro Bono, and Paul to have reached the final stage and great news for the College. We wish them the best of luck for the awards event on March 25.”
