Leaders in legal training

Just what makes The College of Law the leaders in legal education?

It would be easy to say it’s due to the universally-recognised excellence of our training. But our reputation has been earned – and it’s not just by the high standards we demand.

Continual innovation… our dedication to legal training… an unrivalled network of contacts… a track record in securing employment for our graduates… our reputation as an employer… our ongoing investment in the future diversity, accessibility and shape of the legal services industry… all these factors contribute to making us the leaders in our field.

Innovation in action

When it comes to innovation, our record speaks for itself. We were the first independent institution to be granted degree-awarding powers by the Privy Council in 2006. We pioneered flexible online learning, and our creative study options allow students to fit in their studies around their commitments and location.

We were also the first to introduce tailored career routes for LPC and PSC, and we recognise the diversity of legal careers across our courses. We only employ qualified lawyers and practitioners to design and deliver our courses so that they accurately reflect legal practice.

To make a difference in the community, give our students real experience and help make legal advice accessible to a wider public, we also pioneered the establishment of student pro bono clinics.

Our world-class learning approach was recently endorsed by the Quality Assurance Agency, when they renewed the College's degree awarding powers. Read the full report

Focused on experience, focused on jobs

At The College of Law, our students come first. Not just through the standard of training they enjoy – but because of our dedication from day one to helping them find employment in an increasingly competitive industry.

From the day they accept a place with us we focus on helping students build successful careers. Our market-leading law careers and employability service offers a wide range of personalised services including careers coaching, a successful mentoring programme and over 3,000 pro bono work placements a year. We also draw on the best network of contacts in the business to give students access to more than 3,000 legal job vacancies a year. This support continues well after graduation through membership of our free of charge Alumni Association.

Our courses are also designed specifically to prepare graduates for practice, through practical learning methods and a unique commercial awareness programme. With this level of dedication to our students, it’s little wonder that 84% of our LPC graduates find legal employment within months of graduation (based on known records of students successfully completing their studies in 2010).

A helping hand into the law

At The College of Law we recognise that for the legal profession to thrive, it needs talent from all walks of life. That’s why we work with strategic partners to make legal careers more accessible and the profession itself more representative of the society it serves.

Our Pathways to Law programme is a prime example. We are the main financial contributor to this ground-breaking scheme and work together with educational charity the Sutton Trust, leading law firms and top universities to open up the possibility of a career in law to state school students with no family history of university. The programme was shortlisted in the ‘Excellence in Equality and Diversity’ category of the Law Society Excellence Awards 2010.

Our Future Lawyers Network is another example of our efforts to widen access to legal careers to young people from all backgrounds. From the age of 16, members can receive advice on legal careers and the training needed to succeed.

In addition, the College has established the Henry Hodge Traineeship, a legal aid training contract designed to help young lawyers forge a career in this vital area. The traineeship is in memory of former College governor and legal aid pioneer, Sir Henry Hodge.

Thinking ahead

Our commitment to the future of the industry extends to ensuring that legal services policy is ready to meet the challenges of the future. That’s why we established the Legal Services Institute – a think-tank under the leadership of renowned industry figure Professor Stephen Mayson. As an independent body, the Institute acts solely in the public interest to advise and inform on legal services policy issues.
